High: 27° / Low: 16° — Dude Weather Subscribe to Secrets Minneapolis / St. Paul
So... I am really looking forward to watching the World Cup on TV starting Friday, but where in the Twin Cities can I watch the games? Are there any sports bars that will be showing games? I would rather watch at a place with a definite bias; where will the most raucous crowd for the Mexico vs Angola game be? What about Italy vs. USA? Brazil vs. Australia? I want screaming, drinking, multinational insanity.
The Local. They just changed their website and it really sucks. ESPN schedule of games is here. Ireland didn't make it, so you can count on a somewhat neutral crowd, except of course they'll be rooting against England.
It seems obvious, but Brit's Pub on Nicollet Mall is showing the games too. I believe they're pro England. Don't expect a lot of Paraguay or Trinidad/Tobago fans there.
According to one of the internets premier futbol blogs, based right out of the twin cities, Du Nord reports that it is the Nomad: Here in Minneapolis were opening at 11am and showing all the matches everyday, (if its a game people really want to see at 8am well do it/ were just not promoting that so hard. Well tape all the early games and run em later in the day if they rock). Weve teamed up with CityPages, 89.3 The Current, and Soccer Express for the promotion. Decking out the bar as a german beer hall, serving Hacker, Paulaner, Becks, Spaten et al. Weve got a futbol club thats $25 and it gets you 20oz Imperial pint glass (all different countries) filled w/ delicious bier , a Cupa 2006 Nomad World Pub Futbol Club Tee, and a passport/ punchcard that you earn points in to win prizes. Points are gotten (sounds germaine eh) in a variety of easy ways: drinking, picking winner of match, participating in contests in the outdoor field area/ winning contests, drinking again. If youre in the club the imperial pints are $4. Contests are things like, dribble and drink, juggling, progressive mini ball, 3v3 etc. Giving away cool merch from vendors daily, i-pods weekly, and big grand prize at end (Best Buy gift cert for plasma I think). Also having 3v3 championship after the finals that well give away something that needs to be discovered soon. Bar 612.338.6424, 501 Cedar Ave S.
More importantly Derusha, how did your wife take your investigative report on blonde chicks drinking, or whatever that was about?
Ha.. she's used to it by now. The story was about the FDA trying to get restaurants to reduce portion sizes... and we did a live shot at View Restaurant's patio. The truck operator set me up at a table with two really gorgeous women! Fantastic! I blogged about it, just waiting for it to show up on the site.
Awesome.
I find the whole affair unwatchable, but I always hope France wins.
You might be able to catch a match at Kierans Irish Pub downtown. I think they're of a mind to show it on TV.
soccer = yawwwwwwwn
dark cloud, thanks for the press release. Shall we run them for all the other bars, too?
Sure, if you want. You paid for the website, so you can delete the thing for all i care, but a little c&p is a lot easier than a rewrite. Never having been to the Nomad before, it seems like it'll have more of the screaming, drinking, and multinational insanity that was requested in the original post than the Irish bars for businessman. I've watched plenty of international matches at the Local, and can vouch for the apps (mini-burgers!), but not the crowds.
Maybe we could put together a list of bars that one can go to. I'm asking some of my buddies and will let you know where lots of hispanics will be watching the games...
Cue the Rickey Martin World Cup song! ole ole ole!
I'll be cheering on England at Brits!
The world cup is a great opportunity to root for Nationalist sentiments without having to fight a war to do it. As such I will avoid the Nomad, as I still become uneasy @ the sight & sound of German Nationalism. Othjer recommended venues for the teams with the strongest followings:
Sat 6/10 8am England v. Paraguay...Bloody Marys & brunch @ Brits
Sun 6/11 10:30am Mexico vs. Iran @ ???
Mon 6/12 11am US v Czech @ Brits for lunch
Thu 6/15 11am England v. Trinidad @ Brits for lunch
Fri 6/16 2pm Mexico v. Angola @ Masa for happy hour
Sat 6/17 1:30pm US v. Italy @ Brits for lunch
Tue 6/20 @ 2pm Sweden v England @ Brits...both sides should have strong support
Anyone know where Brazilian women go to watch their team????
g rote, what about work?
thank goodness for dvr and hd! i think i'll just enjoy the game at home with some friends.
There is a bar on W. Lake Street that has a Red, White, and Green Miller sign shaped like Mexico. I heard that is a good place to watch some games, not sure though.
Between Blaisdell and Bryant. I think that's the place to watch Mexico vs. games.
Is it called the Yukon?
Yeah, it's called the Yukon.
I would think you'd want to drop by some of the haunts in the District Del Sol neighborhood on St. Paul's West Side for the Mexico matches.
work? i'm paid to plan parties, to be cool, meet people, strategically place myself @ the right events @ the right times. sort of like Steve Marsh with a brain.
Wherever you go...please refer to them as MATCHES- not games! They play soccer matches. Calling them 'games' just shows that about all you know about futbol extends as far as Brazil=good, ManU and Becks.
In any event..have fun wherever you land.
Hey! What about St. Paul?!?? I want to see some matches downtown during the workday, but the only place I know for sure is Glockenspiel on West 7th, and that's not exactly downtown. Of course, that's probably THE PLACE TO BE if you're a Germany supporter. Any ideas???
Thanks for the info! I'm looking for where to watch the Mexico games. Called The Yukon and they didn't seem to know anything about it, but will probably check it out tomorrow anyway. I found a Strib article with some additional venues, such as Holy Land Deli, 2513 Central Ave. NE. I'm also pretty sure that Mapps Coffee (1810 Riverside Ave., on the West Bank) will be showing games.
I want to watch the Mexico game tomorrow. Where's a good place (besides brits, etc). I want a bar with a Mexican vibe!
Well, there was just an article in the Taste section of the Star trib about bars and restaurants to watch the matches.
I know La Bodega is showing the games.
Not Mexican but at least they will most likely be showing the games in spanish.
The new Global Market at Lake and Elliot has the matches on a big screen. Plus you can eat ethnic food while you watch.
Does anybody know where to go to watch the French match against Togo tomorrow?
Does anyone know where fans of France gather to watch the games?
