MNSpeak: Talk

Make Bob Suffer!

On Saturday morning, I will try to force my old, overweight and asthmatic body up 48 flights of stairs in a downtown skyscraper for a Lung Association fundraiser. I'm going to the top because zenrhino called my bluff in another thread. Since you all have endured my many posts and comments on smoking bans, E85, biodiesel and even the WCCO news set, I thought I would offer you all the chance to make me suffer. Zenrhino has pledged $60 to the ALAMN if I make it to the top, and prove it with a photo. More than a 100 people (including firefighters from four cities) are climbing with me. I will try to give a shout out to the MNSpeak family on WCCO-AM and the Fox9 Morning Show -- if I have any breath left.

Man, I want to do this. Oh well, sleeping in on saturdays is nice too.

You can register on-site, if you want, wayne. We will do it again next year, too. This is a big deal in other cities, especially in Chicago.

Get it in the IDS Tower and I'm in.

Yeah I think running up the stairs of the Sears tower is a little more impressive than anything we've got.

Just let us know well in advance so we can train. Climbing 70 flights of stairs is something I would prefer to train for. You know, so I don't die. I'd like the journey to end on the actual roof, as well, so we can get some fresh air (and to take pictures if we're still alive).

FWIW - I had a dream the other night that a King Kong-sized Philip Johnson let me hang on while he climbed and then proceeded to play on the IDS Tower. Or maybe it was a premonition...

Dr. Peter Venkman: Where are we?
Dr. Raymond Stantz: Looks like we're in the teens, somewhere.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Alright, when we get to twenty, tell me, I'm gonna throw up.

"We will do it again next year, too."

Well, the survivors, maybe.

(I smoke like a chimney, and we used to do a 23-floor building, up and down three times, three days a week at lunch. You're not really setting a killing-floor kind of goal here.)

If you can't take the elevator or be carried up by the gals that
carry Borat around...rumor has it they may be lady fire EMTs...

TAKE IT SLOW...TAKE IT EASY...sit and heft your butt up some
steps instead of walking upright...

If ya don't make it we'll use the pledge money to buy a few
rounds in your memory!

"If ya don't make it we'll use the pledge money to buy a few
rounds in your memory!"

Have them at the 331 at my wake. It will make up for them getting stuck with my bar tab.

I'm packing up now. Wish me luck!

Well, I survived. And, yes, I did suffer.

I screwed up the live shot with KMSP-TV Morning Show, but I nailed the WCCO-AM interview later (did a shout-out to the MNSpeakers who supported me).

Thanks to zenrhino and mike s. for their contributions. I picked up another donor at the event (our board chair) who thought my online plea for pain was worth supporting, too.

I'm bone tired. Dog need walking when I got home. Bourbon need drinking, too. Will post photo of me and my team at later date.

Bye, and thanks again!

PS: There will be a 5 p.m. story on Channel 9 as well...

Final results here.

Top male finisher was Andy Rishavy, Roseville, with a time of 6:29. Top female finisher was Nancy Schmelzle, St. Louis Park, at 8:11. Nancy's time was less than half that posted by Bob Moffitt, who limped in at 19:30

While the donor pages of the website are closed (gee, thanks, webmaster!) checks can still be sent to:

Power Climb for Clean Air
American Lung Association of Minnesota
490 Concordia Ave., St. Paul, MN 55103-2441

All checks go directly to finance staff, so donors will remain anonymous (sorry again, kwatt) if they wish. If who wish, just write "Bob Moffitt" on the check somewhere and it will be credited to my donor account.

Again, thanks to all who donated. Hope wayne and kwatt can join in next year.
