Let's politically stalk each other!

Posted February 4, 2008

Fundrace and Huffington Post have teamed up to allow you to easily look up which campaigns your friends, frenemies, family, co-workers and ornery neighbors have given money to. You can search by name, address, occupation. Stalk much?

There are 4 GOP donors in my entire zip code (55406). Who knew there would be that many?

Fun tool! General Mills employees overwhelmingly donating Democratic.

It's obviously more for fun than real research. I can't believe that only $9122 was donated by Target Employees.

I've always just used Newsmeat...is there an advantage to this new site over Newsmeat?
»» Submitted by grote at 4:53 PM on February 4

Yeah I was thinking the same thing...

What do we need this for when we've already got Newsmeat?

Looks like Tom Gegax from Tires Plus was a John Edwards guy, but now he's switched over to Obama in a big way.

Also, it appears that Denny Hecker and his wife Tamitha both gave money to Giuliani, then Denny decided to slip a little something to Obama as well.

Carl Pohlad supports Obama, as does Keith Ellison. In fact, it looks like Obama has a huge amount of support in Minneapolis, based on campaign contributions.

I always used tray.com, which is now cq.com money line. Very interesting...

Because no one posted newsmeat on MNSpeak today?

I'm sure there's more but it all went to PACs.

I've absolutely used fundrace for stalking.

The Target PAC no doubt exists, just like Honeywell and probably many more corporations... especially those in defense... has its own PAC funded by matching employees' contribution to a charity of their choice.
»» Submitted by champs|rt53 at 6:34 PM on February 4

THis appears to be only presidential candidates, not PACs, Congressional races or state races. Fun anyway.

So, if we're talking about individual Taregetron donations, aren't they grass roots individuals like anyone else? It's just that they happen to work at Target?
»» Submitted by The Rat at 8:24 PM on February 4

and we all know that corporate leaders would never exert pressure on their employees to donate to a specific cause or candidate...nod, nod, wink, wink.
»» Submitted by grote at 9:37 PM on February 4

Wow! I just found out that not only did I donate $250 to Bill Richardson's campaign, I live in Batimore!

This Interweb thang is scary. It should be banned.

i have three days of stalking under my belt already. good times!
»» Submitted by honey bunny at 8:28 AM on February 5

The search tool is not very inclusive. It will only search for exactly what you type in. So if you type Target you will get different results than if you search for Target Corporation.

Here is a fun household I'm sure!

$1000 to McCain by the Hubby
$426 to Obama by the Wifey

Now if I can only find one with Huckabee and Hillary!
»» Submitted by Mpls Simpleton at 10:22 AM on February 5

huh... I've given money to Obama and Clinton and yet my name doesn't show up. I wonder if there's a minimum.
»» Submitted by »»» acalhoun at 10:25 AM on February 5

The Pohlad family seems to be split down the middle for Hillary and Barack.

The fine print states "All calculations are based on public records filed with the FEC of contributions by all individuals totaling more than $200 (and some totaling less than $200) to a single Republican or Democratic presidential campaign or national committee for the 2004 and 2008 election cycles."

Acalhoun, I've given money too and my name doesn't show up either.
»» Submitted by »»» tara_r at 10:32 AM on February 5

Interesting how many "journalists" gave money, including one from Fox News who gave to Edwards.

It's called hedging your bets.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa.

Newsmeat lists me as giving $350 to America Coming Together in 2004. That was for Springsteen tickets, which I eventually had to sell at a huge loss because 1. soft demand for the show flooded the market with excess tickets, and 2. it conflicted with Twins playoff games.

That's not unusual. Most men vote republican. Most women vote democrat. It's called living in a house divided.

There you go, just making stuff up again.
»» Submitted by »»» msparber at 11:01 AM on February 5

At the risk of defending maz, there's some statistical backing to that statement.
»» Submitted by »»» jeffk at 11:06 AM on February 5

If it's not unusal how come it's fairly rare on the map?

Sweet who knew Neal Doughty - REO Speedwagon lived in Minneapolis.

It's also alternately called groupthink or collectivism.

I was unaware of that, Simp. But I'm certainly willing to Roll with the Changes.
»» Submitted by grote at 11:12 AM on February 5

Wait wait wait hold up you sold Springsteen tickets? You had Bruce Springsteen tickets IN YOUR HANDS and you SOLD THEM?!?!

I'm sorry, I need a moment.

I'm surprised you guys would question that. The old "daddy party" versus "mommy party" meme has been around for ages.

but looking at the chart makes me wonder what happends to d00ds when they turn 70

Here. Scroll down a bit.

That doesn't support your "most" contention.

Among men, Republicans only have a plurality. Most men DON'T identify as Republican: they identify as independent or Democrat. The best you could say is that more men voted Republican.

If you look at the "partisan trend" table, the Democratic party gender gap for men is considerably smaller than the Republican's female gender gap.

Not to mention that that data is 3+ years old, and they used 9/11 as the dividing point. I'd like to see data from the 2006 election. My suspicion is the gap has closed considerably.

There are lots of memes that have been around for ages that have little support in reality.
»» Submitted by »»» mnblrmkr at 11:33 AM on February 5

Don't worry boilermaker, I won't call you a sissy because you vote democrat. I stopped doing that awhile back.
»» Submitted by »»» mazasapa at 11:34 AM on February 5

Hey Stassen, the proper nomenclature is Democratic Party. It's adjectival not nomitive.
»» Submitted by Hey! at 11:47 AM on February 5

Wait wait wait hold up you sold Springsteen tickets? You had Bruce Springsteen tickets IN YOUR HANDS and you SOLD THEM?!?!

They weren't just Springsteen tickets. We also got REM, John Fogarty, and Neil Young.

And I had 2 extra tickets and I gave them to a friend...
