Does anyone know the best way to report that a local business is dealing drugs? I know of two adjacent businesses in Uptown that are involved in this.
Post about it on MNspeak.
Then Google "Minneapolis Report Crime"
Then go to the Report a Crime or Incident page at the City of Minneapolis website.
Look at the top four links on that page and decide which one applies best for your situation.
Also, Minneapolis has been trying hard to promote their Minneapolis 311 service. It's a free call that answers questions like this and in some cases can file police reports over the phone depending on the type of crime. If 311 can't directly help you, they can point you to the right place to call.
if you could discreetly email me the names of the business as well as the type, price and quality of the drugs in question, I will be sure to conduct a thorough investigation.
311 is a great resource. When I lived over on 3rd, they were my new best friend. Very helpful and directed me to the right resource if they couldn't help me out. More times than not, they were able to help.
You basically need to call 911 when a crime and/or suspicious act is happening. You need to call each and every time you see it.
Now, I'm guessing that you "know" it is happening, but you don't see it. You can talk to or send an email to the police. For uptown, you may want to send it to Lt. Marie Przynski. She is really great. But they can't do anything unless a crime is being committed. People really need to call 911.
kc! brings up a good point. To stress, if you currently see a crime happening, call 911 immediately.
1. cc me on the email to grote.
2. Contact your crime prevention specialist. They are paid to chat with residents, and are less likely to give you the brush-off than beat cops.
3. Schedule a ride along with a cop in your neighborhood, and talk it over with them. They're pretty open about stuff they're investigating when you're cruising around for hours on a boring weekday night. I got the low-low on a major investigation in my neighborhood a month before it broke. Note: this tactic is probably more successful when you're a chick :)
1. cc me on the email to grote.
Is there a sign up sheet? Um, it's for a friend.
In Minneapolis they really want you to call 9-1-1 for everything. Even things like people on the street being aggressive with panhandling. Certainly suspecting drug dealing would rise to the level of a 9-1-1 call, even thought it doesn't seem like a pressing emergency.
is 9-1-1 appropriate for a fashion emergency?
Here's a Good Question- why do they tell people to call 911 for everything, when their response times are shit? It's good for generating a record for properties that are licensed, but I've seen the lack of hustle for non-emergency calls, and it's disheartening.
911 is a joke.
411, on the other hand, is serious business.
Let me in on that cc as well.

So, you were complaining about yourself when you griped about the crackhead neighbors in your old neighborhood? :-)
(apologies if I'm getting people mixed up)
Nope. That was me, mnblrmkr. Not a me being a crackhead, but the neighbors, but, then, er, well, nevermind.
Good memory... or do I talk about the crackhead neighbors a lot?
Well, they were and they were bizzzzeeee.
I believe the e-mail would list a var-i-et-eee.
Good memory... or do I talk about the crackhead neighbors a lot?
It has been awhile.
It just struck me as an odd thing for someone unhappy about drug dealing next door to them to joke about.
Hey, The Rake has to stay afloat somehow - am I right?
Leave a very detailed, thorough message for the undercover team that handles this type of thing, trust me from experience. Call your local precinct and ask to be put in the voicemail of the CRT team (pronounced cert like the breath mint) Leave the best, most detailed info you can on what you have seen, times, people, vehicles, anything that you can remember. Sit back, with some patience the undercover team will do their thing.
It also wouldn't hurt to call your council member's office either and make a complaint.
Not interested in the drugs, but out of curiosity, what businesses are these?
As a fellow Uptown resident, I am concerned.
When we lived near Uptown, some little twerps were dealing drugs out of the apartment next to us. Kids would be showing up to buy ecstasy for prom night.
One of them got stabbed over it. Those kids were abominable.
people get stabbed of ecstasy....with what a glowstick?
Why isn't the Strib reporting the illegal immigration status of the woman using an ALIAS who killed four children on the school bus in Cottonwood?
As an aging pot smoker with no reliable drug dealer why do I always find out about these "stores" in the media right as they are getting busted? I can't find a reliable drug dealer to save my life, and here they are selling it right out of a STORE less than 2 miles from my house? A few months back there was a store was busted in Southdale, also a few miles from my house in the other direction. Geeeeez, how are you supposed to find out about these things?
Random Uptown clerk: "And your change is $1.39, thanks for stopping in."
Me: "Thanks, have a good day. Oh, and say, do you happen to sell pot here, you know, on the side or anything like that?"
Random Uptown clerk: "Um, no. No, we do not."
By all indications these handy little stores are popping up everywhere but it would make life a lot easier if it we could handle this like they do in L.A., where all of the pot vendors put giant, 10-foot-tall neon green pot leaves in their storefront windows and huge display posters advertising things like "TODAY: ORGANIC THAI-THUNDERFUCK BLEND!" or "FREE GRAM FOR FIRST TIME CUSTOMERS! CLASSIC BREAKFAST BLEND OR THE NEW PURPLE HAZE!! "
no drugs for me either. But I'd like to know what business. I live in the heart of uptown on top of two adjacent businesses and would like to have a heads up. if you don't feel comfortable elaborating here. please email me. Kal.ajmi[at]gmail.com
Thanks
Why isn't the Strib reporting the illegal immigration status
Story today said they were "evaluating" her status. She had a state of Minnesota ID.
I realize the "she was an illegal ALIEN (not immigrant)" drumbeat is all over talk radio, with the usual lame disclaimers, as in, "we're not saying she is and ILLEGAL ALIEN, PART OF THE RAGGED HORDE OF HUMAN DEBRIS WASHING OVER OUR BORDER, but if she is......
Maybe the Strib is being a little more careful.

Thanks
Out of curiosity, are these businesses causing trouble in the neighborhood? Attracting violent and unsavory characters?
Thanks for the advice. I knew of all the different options (except for the ride-along..tehee.. but you never know which ones are actually effective.
What kind of drugs?! I guess you imply illegal drugs?
Unadultered plants or chemicals mixed in a lab? Big difference! And you suck if you'd inform on the first variety.
A guy came in and asked for weed and the shopkeep directed him to an adjacent store. This is America, Paulie, where we can't wait more than 2 minutes for a meal.. who has the fucking patience for unprocessed plants?
Don't be a narc. Weed is a petty misdemeanor in Mn; the equivalent of jaywalking.
Do you call the cops on jaywalkers?
Just weed? Unless it's attracting violence and livability issues, who cares.
I'm sure you know of at least one drug user. Have you called the cops on them yet?
The Strib knows she is an illegal.
Link please.
Oh, that's right. You don't know how to link.
If the government hasn't yet confirmed her immigration status, how do you expect the Strib? Read the stories before commenting moron. I know that is too much to ask of you though.
bud knows she's illegal, just like he knew Sanchez-Flores was illegal.
so i should be calling 911 every time i see a jaywalker or hear someone asking around for weed? i'm gonna be a very busy man....
Thanks for the laughs Grote. Classic.
Don't get sucked in, folks...
You're right aliecat. But something about a Confederate Flag waving, dueling banjo gap toothed back swamp gun toting racist just sort of has this brand of magnetism.
Here's a Good Question- why do they tell people to call 911 for everything, when their response times are shit?
Probably because a central clearinghouse is easier to deal with than a bunch of different ways into the system.
And I understand your frustration that response times can be slow, but unfortunately you live in a city where real crime happens. You can't really expect them to ignore a murder for your break-in, can you?
They usually do a good job to responding to drug crimes in progress. I've had a few times that were slow, but they have a very good system for prioritizing crime. Sit in a cop car sometime and you can see it happen.
Unadultered plants or chemicals mixed in a lab? Big difference! And you suck if you'd inform on the first variety.
I agree there is a big difference, but as long as weed remains illegal people selling it from a storefront/house/car does create problems for the neighbors. Illegal drug dealing creates a scene of sketchy people regardless of which drug it is. It also brings down property values, increases crime, and drives neighbors INSANE watching it happen.
And, don't any of you tell the 1999 kc! that I wrote this. She would kick my ass.
And clearly I came on this thread way too late in the day, since I will now have 3 comments in a row, but...
People are not illegal. People are undocumented.
but as long as weed remains illegal people selling it from a storefront/house/car does create problems for the neighbors. Illegal drug dealing creates a scene of sketchy people regardless of which drug it is.
It can, but acalhoun has yet to describe any problems it's caused. For all we know, it's just one employee who happens to deal and the next door shopkeeper knows and doesn't care. If I was acalhoun, I'd think very hard about whether this is worth sparking an undercover investigation upon these citizens based on some shaky evidence he overheard. Please don't waste my tax money if there isn't any reason other than drugs are bad, mmkay.
I'm all for the legalization of drugs. I also think we need to have lesser laws around drug offenses. But, I also think drug dealers need to be more concerned about their neighborhoods. Their actions do affect neighborhoods. They should deliver until it is legal.
Yeah, I know KC. But it's still frustrating. The really frustrating part is that the bar is so low that some (not all) of the beat cops have stopped caring about response times, or results in general. I've called on crimes in progress, waited two or three hours only to get a cop who scolds me for wasting his time when they'll never catch anyone.
The message is inconsistent, to put it mildly.
I've been scolded by 911 operators, so I feel your pain, yepnope.
But I just have to believe that the police are doing their best. I've too called on a crime in progress, that lasted 15 minutes, to no response. I just have to think they had something else going on.
Plus, some cops are just assholes.
Wow, way to gang-up on the author and call him a NARC.
If you want to change the law and make weed legal go ahead. Currently it isn't. Small crimes do contribute to big problems in neighborhoods and ignoring them is not the way towards eliminating crime.
Graffitti, vandalism, and weed dealing are small crimes but should be pursued.
Next time I see a crime, I'll be sure to stop and think real hard whether it is a good use of taxpayer money to call it in. (good idea Jim)
And what is acalhoun supposed to do, perform a study on the impact of the weed selling to his hood? What kind of ridiculous suggestion is this?
I suppose prostitution, graffitti, drug-selling,etc. are not eve crimes really. I'll make sure to ignore them next time I see them, wouldn't want to be called a NARC after all.
It's completely unrelated, but I'd like to point out that WCCO is identifying the woman as being a potential illegal immigrant, undermining bud's usual idiotic point that the press is for some reason trying to keep information from us.
Also, while dope may not incite violence amongst its users, it sure can amongst purveyers jostling for turf and market share. NOT GOOD.
Once I got the third degree from 911 when I was reporting a likely crime in progress. There was a girl screaming and a van shaking out my window at seven corners. I figured they could have a cop stop and see if anything bad was going on (despite the axiom "if the van is rocking don't come knocking"). But the 911 operator quizzed me on whether or not I'd been drinking etc. until there was no more action or screaming.
Thanks for the support. I'm not anti-user, as I've said on here before I think it should be legalized and taxed. But as it stands, the sale of it brings about a lot of collateral damage.
that WCCO is identifying the woman as being a potential illegal immigrant,
The woman had a MN state ID. How does an illegal immigrant get a state ID? How does anyone get a state ID? Does this mean she could vote too? hmmmm.
I also think prostitution, but that doesn't mean I want to live next door to a brothel.
I want to live IN a brothel.
And, come on people, I thought MNSpeakers are hip. People aren't "narcs" any more, they are "snitches". As in, stop snitchin'.
Yes, I for one will take the advice of contemporary cultural leaders such as 50 cents and will "stop snitchin'".
After all if the guy next door is a serial killer, that is none of my business.
The woman had a MN state ID. How does an illegal immigrant get a state ID? How does anyone get a state ID? Does this mean she could vote too? hmmmm.
Until 1940, you couldn't legally vote in this country, maz. Who is -- and is not -- able to vote largely depends on the Wasicu in charge at the time, eh?
I'm just asking, because I don't know about the bureaucracy of ID cards. Would she have had to present a birth certificate or something to get an ID card? Can you use a MN ID card to register to vote? I don't know. I figured one of you government types would know.
Maz, getting an ID card is similar to getting a driver's license I would assume, except without the tests.
Jason: Good Question?
For Maz:
MN ID card instructions.
The Strib knew and held it.
It's on their site now. as of 11:25am today.
Watch how thsi gets played.
When is enough enough?
CLOSE THE BORDERS!
Ugh. We're too late. Somehow, Bud's ancestors got through.
KARE 11 site still more concerned about donuts than illegals killing children.
CLOSE THE BORDERS!
Gladly, once you and your knuckledragging chums step over to the other side.
Otherwise, what's the point?
May I suggest you start a blog of your own, bud?
Aren't the borders already closed? My understanding is that even US citizens need a passport to get in.
In other words, what the hell are you talking about?
I can already tell that I don't want to read this thread anymore. Keep fighting the good fight, though, kc.
And I'm sure this woman came to the United States with the sole purpose of killing children. It probably had nothing to do with a better life for herself...
Since the subject of this thread is drug dealing uptown, and not bud's hobby horse, let's return to the original subject. Any further discussion of illegal immigration will be removed from this thread as off-topic.
Yeah comparing minor drug offenses to serial killing makes a lot of sense. Do you obey every single law?
Complex problems have simple, easy to understand, wrong answers.

What happened in Cottonwood is an unimaginable tragedy for the families. It's a shame that some folks feel the need to use the tragic death of a group of kids as a political football...or even worse flamebait.
But your "solution" of closing the borders will not only cripple our economy, it would keep more Mexicans in than it keeps out. It's far too complex a problem for that simple a solution. As a matter of fact, if that's your solution, your either flamebaiting or stupid. And you've been around here long enough for us to know that you're both.
Now that I've vented, here's a great made-for-TV debate about a similar case in Virginia. Do I get some sort of prize for linking to Geraldo Rivera 2x in one week? Perhaps a free tour of Capone's Vault?
Speak for yourself.
Okay, back on topic, this came from the City of Minneapolis website:
To report suspected drug activity and prostitution, with specific information on times, behavior, etc.call the Community Response Team (CRT) at your precinct:
1st Precinct (Downtown Minneapolis)................673-2880
2nd Precinct (Northeast Minneapolis)................673-5782
3rd Precinct (South Minneapolis east of 35W)...673-5706
4th Precinct (North Minneapolis)........................673-5707
5th Precinct (South Minneapolis west of 35W)...673-5716
This was mentioned before. Uptown is in the 5th precinct.
Sorry Max. I was posting my original comment whilst you were posting your ban.
yo tambien.

It is news maybe we should have a post for it. Ignoring the problem is no solution.

I'm not going to wade into this shark tank beyond asking rhetorically if you know how many times in the last 10 days I've heard that we need to _______ because the 35W bridge collapsed.
That's all.
I posted about it just a few days ago, Swandog. That thread is still open.
And once again kwatt sees fit to flame the fires despite being asked nicely not to by the admin.
Have you no respect for authority, sir?
totally guilty as charged, Kevin. Why, just the other day I told my wife, "we need to __take 280__ because the 35W bridge collapsed."
I also believe that I may have, on a separate occasion, said "we need to __cross the 3rd Avenue bridge to get to campus__ because the 35W bridge collapsed"
Just another example of how driving has become a political minefield.
"The bridges are falling down because a gerbil is in Gov. Polenta's __________ ."
You may want to tabulate some drug-oriented institutions further up Hennepin Avenue. Starting with the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, which is a privately owned entity and its shareholders are major regional banks. Banks which are basically permitted to launder as much drug money as they please. However as a matter of courtesy it should be laundered at least three times before coming in. Why do you think Citigroup has operated that fabulous branch down in Bogota for years? Coffee money? (and why did the feds let them buy out the corrupt Mexican bank Banamex?) The computers at Fed-Mpls should be tabulating the money transfers within the system, and data patterns should be readily apparent.
Secondly you should phone in the Homeland Security department, as their hordes of Florida contractors cannot seem to help themselves in bringing in thousands of pounds of cocaine to the same good ol boy-controlled parts of the U.S. as the 1980s. (the MN office is in downtown St. Paul and they do not let you come in to say hello without an appointment, so no, you can't demand their shady contracts).
I mean, if you're worried about a couple fronts in Uptown, consider then the institutions which profit decade-in, decade-out, with nary a ripple. Where else does all that money go, outer space?
Seriously if someone tapes the Mpls 311 operator getting the tip about the Fed, that would be a pretty cool audio. Eh???
FYI, state IDs and drivers' licenses are not intended to be proof of citizenship, nor do they, in of themselves, qualify one to vote. State IDs and DLs serve as proof of your name, residence, and age.
The procedures for registering to vote are more concerned with making you prove that you live where you say you do (and are thus eligible to vote in that particular precinct) than in making you prove your citizenship. In signing the registration card (and in signing the roster when you get your ballot), you are required to swear that you are eligible to vote, i.e. that you are a citizen of the U.S., over the age of 18, haven't had your rights removed, etc. You are not currently required to provide any document that proves you are a citizen. In fact, if you need to register at the polling place on election day, a passport alone, although it proves you are a citizen, is not adequate. You also need something that proves you live where you say you do, such as a current state ID/DL, or a recent utility bill.
I really don't think there are an appreciable number of people who are not citizens that are trying to vote. I just don't believe it, and as far as I know, no one has ever presented any evidence that this is happening.
Here's a thought: Why not leave an anonymous note for the business owner threatening telling the police? They will almost certainly make sure it stops and you won't have to feel like you ruined anyone's life.
But, I also think drug dealers need to be more concerned about their neighborhoods.
i'm sorry, but that's the funniest thing i read all week.
