According to an IT executive from Minneapolis, the iPhone doesn't fare too well during the city's frigid winters. When temperatures there plummet - sometimes well below zero - the touch screen won't dial anymore.

I've used my iPhone numerous times in weather well below 0º F. Never had any problems with temperature and out of the numerous iPhone users I know, I've never heard of this problem.
The only time I've had problems with the touch screen is when there's condensation, snow or some other form of moisture on it. Easy fix: wipe it off.
Also from the article: "The IT exec doesn't support iPhones internally, but notes with a chuckle that the mechanical keys on his company-issued Blackberrys seem to work just fine in the cold weather."
As an IT "exec" myself, again, I've never heard of this problem. In fact, I note with a chuckle that the iPhone works significantly better than the Blackberry with our company email (which runs IMAP, you nerds).
Gotta start a flame war right, eh?

I'm surprised this is news. Take any touchscreen LCD, leave it out in sub-zero weather, and it'll do the same thing
okay if the screan works just fine in freezing temps. I think it is as much of a let down that you have to take your gloves off to use it.
meh.

I also agree - this is being blown out of proportion. Apparently this exec likes standing outside in sub-zero weather holding his iPhone for an hour before making a phone call. Because I can't think of any other way that he would run into this problem.

my phone screen does nothing when I touch it, but if I'm out in the cold long enough it barely even updates when I do stuff on the phone. also my battery decides it's way less juiced than it really is.
I'm kind of dumb and like taking 3+ hour walks in subzero temperatures, though.

I've never had a problem with that, myself. Never even heard of it before. Maybe if you left it in the car overnight?

The only problem I've had with mine is when I take off a glove to use it. I get the frozen fingers, and invariably both of my dogs see a squirrel at the same time and take me and the iPhone on an involuntary skijoring escapade. Touchscreen works fine.
I could see it maybe being a problem if you work outdoors a lot and are a big enough dork to believe that anyone other than Batman wearing a phone on a belt is acceptable.
Typing with gloves on a blackberry isn't all that much fun either.
Thankfully there's Jott.

iPhones seem to be doing great here in Austin. At SXSW Interactive they are almost a de facto badge for getting around. If we could harness the energy of all these people stroking their smartphones.
The FireFUx/Opera/IE panel is about to start. Apple won't show. I'd love to see some fur fly...
