As someone who bikes to work 4 times a week I have discovered there are two truths of the road:
#1 Bikers have absolutely no regard for traffic laws due to arrogance, ignorance, or just plain stupidity.
#2 Drivers generally follow traffic laws with regards to other cars but not with bikers due to a combination of truth #1 and ignorance.

Running red lights on East River Road when there are no cars coming - OMG! NO!
Adam is right: there are just as many, if not more, car drivers doing the exact same thing. Which is one of the reasons why when I have my kid in the back bike trailer, I'll always be on the sidewalk or trail. I don' t care how many tickets or reprimands I get.

kevin you don't HAVE to ride in the bike lane. some bike lanes suck because their either crammed into the weird transition between pavement and gutter and so are pitted with potholes and filled with trash, or sometimes they're sandwiched between a traffic lane and a parking lane where anyone can open their door into or pull out in front of you (I'm pretty sure this is the case on grand ave). I don't always feel safe in bike lanes, and it's perfectly legal to ride in traffic lanes (yes, even when a bike lane is present) and I will when I need to.

also in theory you could get a ticket on a trail (I dont know of anyone actually getting one, but in theory ...) for speeding. Most of the trails have speed limits, which are absurdly low if you're in any kind of decent shape and the area is not clogged with other bikes. I mean, really, you expect me to keep it under 10mph on an isolated trail through the woods? HA!

The funny thing about East River Road (where they saw all those people blow through the stop sign.) If you are on the bike path, you don't have to stop. And yes, there are plenty of cars that blow through that stop sign as well.
If it is a problem, then enforce the law. Simple as that.

East River Road has it's share of bad bikers and drivers. Aside from the bikers that routinely blow through the stops, ride side-by-side or veer in and out of the bike lane, I always have some jackass behind me that doesn't understand that when I stop at the stop sign and then go, that he then needs to stop and then go, not just tag in behind me riding my ass until the next sign. It's a nice drive, the river and the trees, a great view of downtown& slow up a bit, 25-30 mph is not going to kill you. And for the bikers, please stop with the lance-wear, that is not what I need to see at 7:45 in the morning.

it's still a good practice to NOT ride on the sidewalk unless you're only going a few blocks or you're nearly to or just leaving somewhere. I usually only hop on for a few blocks when I'm going against traffic on a one-way or when I'm cruising up to a bike rack.
sidewalks are a lot more dangerous to bike on because it's harder to see people coming out of driveways/curb cuts (and harder for them to see you), plus there's the danger of swerving for or hitting pedestrians. No thanks! I'll take the crummy roads and bad drivers most of the time.

I bike most days to work, drive the others. We bikers do sort of suck. We run stop signs, cross the street on reds if it's clear, etc.
Drivers suck too.
In defense of the bikers (a bit): there are some times when I do break the law or at least pose a nuisance, but I try to do it strategically. As wayno said, some bike lanes in Mpls are significantly more dangerous than the roads they're on. Opening car doors, broken glass, and potholes are serious issues to a biker. That said, there are a few intersections (by Metro State for example) where I'll run a red light so that I can get a head start on the cars because "sharing the road" for the blocks leading to the Basilica is a horrifying experience.
Both sides of this issue probably need to chill out and be better to each other.

Depends on the city. State law allows cities to make their own restrictions on riding on the sidewalk. Some cities do restrict sidewalk riding to children under certain ages.

the cedar lake parkway crossing really sucks too, esp. as a biker, because the road curves up and around and the trail crosses at a weird angle and there's a hill on one side so you can't always see cars coming, and they don't actually have to stop for you and DKFLJDsF

Alie - you know that the cyclists are supposed to stop for you, right? There are big signs on the bike path, warning cyclists (and pedestrians) that they have to yield to auto traffic at that crossing. I think that's true for all trail crossings in SLP.
So, if you do actually hit someone, it's not really your fault.

I suppose KSTP couldn't legally chase down the drivers who consider the street's speed limit a "suggestion."
Never mind that the bike lane is a single lane one way, so stop signs are next to inconsequential. You are not in a car lane. Yield to pedestrians, and common courtesy would dictate that a a bicycle crossing from the left would wait until you've cleared the intersection point, so you don't sit and wait for them to work up from walking to cruising speed.

When a biker runs a red light when there are no cars around and doesn't disrupt anybody, then drivers should have the same amount of rage as when they see a pedestrian do it. Pedestrians and bikers have something in common: they're not operating 4000lb killing machines and they can only hurt themselves. The fact that drivers are *more* annoyed when bikers do it only goes to show that this is a manifestation of some deeper hatred of bikers, driven by the price of gas, the traffic they're stuck in, and the deep-seated guilt of being responsible for global warming and middle eastern wars.

The story was just poor journalism. By the reporters own facts, in car/bike accidents cars are at fault half the time. So why focus on bikes? Far more people are killed in car accidents than bike accidents (although I realize more people drive than bike). And if you really want to look at rampant law breaking on the roads just get a radar gun on the freeway or watch any 4 way stop in uptown, cars roll throuh constantly. To focus on bikes not stopping at stop signs and claim it's a huge problem seems to reveal a biased approach to covering enforcement of traffic laws on every type of vehicle on the road.

jeffk- for me the difference is that pedestrians don't constantly tout how they have the same rights as a car (because they don't), but bicyclists can't seem to shut up about it, then run stop lights.

And on my daily bike rides, I have to say, I see pretty bad driving from start to finish: inattentive driving due to cell phone, iPod, or make up, speeding, illegal lane changes, illegal passing, no turn signals, broken tail/brake lights, running red lights (and I'm not simply talking about people "trying to beat the yellow light," I'm talking about people running through a red light 5-10 seconds AFTER it's turned red on them). You name the moving violation, I've probably seen it this week.

In my case, I'd consider that about equivalent to pointing a loaded gun at me. There's no way I can negotiate the bike lane with a vehicle driving along side me that close, and with someone trying to talk to me? With the wind?

The fact that drivers are *more* annoyed when bikers do it only goes to show that this is a manifestation of some deeper hatred of bikers, driven by the price of gas, the traffic they're stuck in, and the deep-seated guilt of being responsible for global warming and middle eastern wars.

And like I was saying earlier they make them in all sorts of styles. The one's I own look just like regular baggy shorts, no spandex.

Did anyone else notice that KSTP shot almost all of that piece on East River Road filming bicyclists headed south in a bike lane where, because of the Mississippi River, there is no cross traffic? Whatever point the story tried to make about risky car-bicycle interactions just doesn't apply there. My guess is that most of the riders shown would stop, or at least slow down and roll through the way cars do, at stop signs where the paths of cars and bikes intersect and create a substantial safety issue. Of course the station's point about horrible scofflaw-ism certainly applies and I await their upcoming expose on jaywalking.

And it's rather idiotic to get worked up over bicyclists doing something that car drivers do all the time as well, with far more severe potential consequences.
As for last night you were wringing your hands over "Obama is going to get smeared by the Republicans," and I was merely pointing out that Hillary is going to get smeared just as badly. For that reason, I didn't base my vote on what the Republicans are going to do to our candidate, because it's going to happen to both of them.

i dare anyone to stand at excelsior blvd and milwaukee st. in hopkins for 2 hours and tell me how many bicyclists run red lights on the path and compare that to cars that run red lights. also take note at how many vehichles have to stop in the middle of an intersection due to a faulty bicyclists who refuses to obey a simple law.
i'm fairly sure you'll see a 4:1 ratio of bicycles who run the red light vs. those who obey basic traffic laws.
please for gods sakes stop at a 4way when there's a car to your left or right. i don't get bicyclists arrogance.

Honestly I rarely see a bike stopping for a stop sign unless it's clear they will have to do so in order to not get hit.
I really have no feelings for bikers or their complaints, their type as a whole needs to clean up their act before they can deserve to whine about anything having to do with traffic.
