TC Eats: Gardens of Salonica
Camacho Watcho: Cafe Maude
We Got Served: Barbette
Eating the Minneapple: Meritage
Have the hours of operation firmed up for GoS?
For years it seems like a roll of the dice if they were open or not. Of course this was probably 12 years go. I guess that goes to show that WRT restaurants peoples memories are long and hard to change.
The food is some of the best Mediterranean food on or about Central Ave. Emily's Lebanese Deli of the road is good too but I always feel like uncomfortable there.
Indeed, the Eggs Bene at Barbette are THE best in the city. It's the hollandaise that seals it. Their mussels in white wine is phenomenal, as well.
Over the years, I've told friends that while you can get a great steak at Manny's, once you try the New York Strip & fries (steak frite) at Barbette you won't be going back to Manny's anytime soon. Their Eggs Benedict IS the best in town IMO as well.

Yea because you'll be sick in the hospital with e.coli.
oooh!
The Cafe Maude post reminded me of Adam Platt's rant on MSP where he complained that Maude wasn't kid-friend enough for him. To that, I say, "Good." Not every restaurant should be. Maude is great at what they do, which is all they need to be.
We've eaten at Salonica a few times. The food is good and not too expensive. But the art in front of the place blows.

I think his complaint was that the owner told him it was kid friendly and it turn out to be not so.
That's even weirder Alie....carrots?
I like barbette, i was just making a jokey

yes, indeed, that was his rant. let's not go down the kids in restaurant road. always ugly, nothing ever comes of it.
my wife brunched @ barbette yesterday, sez food VG, service awful. That's the Kim Bartmann restaurant M.O. in a nutshell, but it seems to be working for her.
Gardens of Salonica most closely resembles the Greek cooking that I was weaned on, cooked by my neighbors growing up, and I go there as often as the urge strikes. I think I read or heard somewhere that Santorini has a date for the wrecking ball, as some fool with money thinks it would be a good place for Condos.
Why does Dougie D feel ill-at-ease @ Emily's...does he over-dress?
It might have just been one of those days but it does seem like a locals place where if you don't know the system they aren't very welcoming.
i think it's more that they have no real professional restaurant polish...truly a family run establishment.
That's even weirder Alie....carrots?
Not that weird. IIRC, the soup was served cold and it's really common to get food-bourne illnesses from raw veggies as they are often the victim of cross contamination.
Grote, I've never had really bad service there, just often kind of slow, which is fine by me on a Sunday. Although I did once have a waitress that was laughable scatterbrained and disaffected. She's still there, too.

I believe that describes 1/2 of Uptown's population.
@g_rote: Speaking of kids, your daughter is my favorite. Also, that little kid who pointed to his pants and insisted that he was fat. And the little red headed toddler with the big head who kept running laps around the tree. But really, of those, your daughter is my favorite.
bix...she's my favorite little girl, too...except for the 1/2 hour immediately following he waking up, at which point she becomes the spawn of satan.
And the little red headed toddler with the big head who kept running laps around the tree.
Poor kid - to be described this way. Now I have Big Head Toddler running 'round my brain.
@cat: The kid was really cute but we really couldn't figure out why he kept running laps around the tree. It wasn't just around the tree, it was up a hill, past a tree, down the hill and back up again.
@grote: Considering that's how I still am, I really hope she eventually grows out of it.
And the little red headed toddler with the big head who kept running laps around the tree.
Haaa! Oh shit, that kid was the best. All he had to do to gain momentum was lower his a head a little. It would totally lead the way. He had little choice but to run after it at that point.
I believe that describes 1/2 of Uptown's population.
That's not true. It's way more than half, and I oughta know.
"But quietly up in Northeast, while the neighborhood has undergone quite the gentrification in the past 10 years, Gardens of Salonica has been gracing the sidewalks with its art and tempting the taste buds with Greek cuisine since 1991."
Is this guy seeing the same neighborhood I live around? There's some new condos, a new grocery store (because there wasn't one, except for Rick's, but who wanted to shop there?) a couple restaurants. It's not Rodeo Drive or anything.
I think that term "gentrification" is kinda loaded. It seems like a veiled perjorative.
"Gentrification" doesn't turn anywhere into Rodeo Drive, Rat. I don't know where you got that idea.
Barbette is one of my favorite restaurants in the Twin Cities. The food is incredibly good and I think the service is great. They also love my dog and have a great beer and wine selection. I am probably there at least once a week in the summer.
OK. But its still a rough-around-the-edges stretch of concrete. Some dive bars, empty buildings and haphazard improvement.
A big-headed ginger kid is ripe for getting teased his entire life, unless he has mad athletic skillz or something.
I too am a big fan of Barbette. I found it interesting that WGS found it to be "pretentious" as I've never gotten that vibe, but I wasn't looking for it either and it seems as if they were anticipating it.
Agree with Alie on service - slow, but never really bad. Food is always excellent and it's a great place for a chill brunch with friends.
Way off topic: Friend just called to tell me that gas @ Costco is $3.69 and I was excited. How sad is that?
You would have to admit that Near NE Mpls (aka Wayne's World) has changed, Rat. You are correct that here are still plenty of rough edges left in your hood.
Cat, I agree that Barbette is not pretentious at all. Also, the waitresses are all cute and have good shoes, so that's a plus!

I always tell people to not make plans too close to having dinner there as the service style is based on the French model of dinner taking at least 2 hours. I think it's also because there are a lot of regular diners there looking to relax and talk with friends. Oh, and seconded on the cute waitresses and waiters (even if most of them are gay and off limits to me).

There haven't been any double murders in the Aurelio's Parking lot lately. It must be gentrified.
Not really. Just a better class of people are being murdered there these days.
