Prince in the East Village

"Neal Medlyn's Unpronounceable Symbol" opened this week, with a good review in the NY Times.

People familiar with Prince's 1984 movie, Purple Rain, will recognize the plot. (Mr. Covelli's portrayal of Princes antagonist, Morris Day, is delicious.) Those less familiar with Prince lore still have much to unpack in this 70-minute show.

No word on how long it will take for Prince's lawyers to shut it down.

booting in mpls on the chopping block

So public hearing was set today to repeal the booting license from Mpls code of ordinances. The "boot" of course is the apparatus placed on your tire if you park where you're not supposed to. Any thoughts? Before you reply, look at this from a property owners prospective as well as the alternative. As a property/business owner, what would you do if you had limited parking for your customers and cars were parking in your spots and going elsewhere? If booting is eliminated, property/business owners will have no choice but to contract with tow companies. That means instead of the $100 boot removal fee, you'll be stuck with a $240-$260 tow fee and your car is gone! Which would you prefer?

Graphic Designers Moving in October

My boyfriend and I are thinking of relocating from Flint MI to Minneapolis this October. We are both graphic designers in our mid 20's, and would like to stay in that field if possible. 2 questions. 1. I've heard Minneapolis is a great place for those interested in the graphic design/advertising industry, but this scares us a bit that it's like LA for actors trying to make it and ending up waiting tables forever. Basically, is the market FLOODED with designers looking for work, or are there plenty of jobs to go around? 2. We're planning on living downtown if we can, but how is getting around in the winters? We're coming from Michigan, so we're used to snow, but just HOW much snow are we talking about? Will we be hard pressed to unearth ourselves enough to go hit the bars or galleries on the weekends? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!

Edina - you get what you pay for?

We (I, my husband, and our two children) are considering relocating to MN from Canada. Our main priority is continuing French Immersion schooling for our children, so that narrows it down to Normandale School in Edina and one school in St. Paul. My husband's potential job is in Bloomington, so we are looking seriously at Edina.

We'd like walkability and proximity to amenities, and the 50th and France area looks appealing. But pricey! Is this a good area in which to live? Are there other locations nearby with a similar feel? Is it possible to find a rental (either a small house, condo or apartment) with 3 bedrooms for around $1500/month?

Finally, where is the best place to find a current rental listing (we'll probably rent for awhile before we take the ownership plunge)? There seem to be a fair number of current listings on craigslist....

Many thanks for all your time,

griselda

7QQ For Adam Gardner of Reverb

(Max -- I will send you a photo of Gardner in an email. Please edit as needed. Thanx -- Bob) Adam Gardner Age: 33 Occupation: vocalist and gutarist for Guster, cofounder (with wife Lauren Sullivan) of Reverb, cofounder of "Hanakoustic rock" group The LeeVees. Residence: Portland, Maine Twin Cities Resident: "No, but you guys seem cool. I like playing here." SEVEN QUICK QUESTIONS: 1) How did you get interested in the environment? I've been interested in environmental issues for a long time, but my wife got me focused. She's a professional environmental educator and activist who used to work for groups like the Rainforest Action Network. 2) Why green music? It's a good fit for us. She knows the environmental side. I knew the music side. Since we formed Reverb, we have both learned a lot about how both sides operate. 3) Any inspirations for your green crusade? Oh, definately. Bonnie Raitt, for sure, and Willie Nelson. They were way out ahead of the green concert movement. 4) So how fo you and your wife "walk the walk" at home? At home? Let me think...we'll we did the compact fluorescent bulb thing in the house, and that made a huge difference in our electricty use. We use only green, nontoxic cleaning solutions, and we offset the carbon we use when we have to drive or fly on personal or Reverb business. 5) What do you know about Minnesota now that you didn't know earlier? It's cold. Just kidding. I didn't know about all diesel fuel in Minnesota having biodiesel in it. That's very cool. 6) What's next for you and Reverb? We are going to try to expand beyond "green concert tours" to green venues, green merchandise, and prompting the whole music industry to become more environmentaly aware and responsible. 7) Do you MNspeak? What?

Harrison Neighborhood

I currently live just outside of the uptown area with my girlfriend and we are considering relocating. Recently, we came across a place in the Harrison neighborhood and I guess I dont know a lot about the area. In researching on the MPD website, it doesnt sound like its unsafe and actually seems pretty comparable to where we're at now in terms of safety. We're generally pretty street smart people anyway and dont walk dark streets at 2 am and just kinda keep to ourselves. Any residents of the neighborhood that can comment on it? I know its close to a few nice parks, Glenwood to Lyndale is an easy route to Uptown, and Olson Memorial is about five blocks north. It would be a lot easier for both of us to get to and from work, and it wouldnt be far from the usual spots we hang out without paying as much for rent.

Give Dubay Another Chance

Now coming from a longtime Gopher Hockey fan and Kfan fan, ack ack a dack, I think Dubay was a good pick for the show and hilarious. When I was out at graduate school in the west, I finally got to watch the Gophers through my cable company, and Dubay was a nice compliment to a homesick feeling the Gophers were already helping by just playing. Yeah, maybe he got a little cocky and said the wrong thing at the wrong time in front of the wrong people (cops and public) giving the false image that it was okay to taunt the refs and that the policeman he was with were cool with it, and showing the youth that it is cool or even acceptable to taunt the refs, when it is, just not when you are a player or host of the show covering it. So myabe a little press conference and a public apology or a PSA on ref respect. I don't know, but the main demographic (sorry, it is a business also isn't it FSN?) should be and is 18-35 and to keep our attention between periods while drinking Summits or Leines with our buddies, we want to see the guy that can relate, the guy dropping superb knowledge, and mixing it all together with funnies. So to tie in the title with a Lennon classic, Giiiiiiive, Giiiiive, give Duaby another chaaaaance.

Lush Release Party

Spout Press, a small, alternative, locally-based press that publishes emerging writers and experimental works recently became a nonprofit (check it out ). It's also hosting a release party for the book Lush: a poetry anthology and cocktail guide on Thursday Feb. 15th at the Nomad Pub, 501 Cedar Ave, on the beautiful West Bank in Minneapolis. There'll be live readings, live music, live mayhem and perhaps a cocktail. Spout has been around for about 15 years and is produced in a living room in Northeast. It has published numerous issues, chapbooks and more, while also promoting other kinds of local artists on an extremely tight budget. Does anyone know of any other similar presses in the Twin Cities with that kind of longevity and productivity? Also, are people familiar with Spout?

Chrisel Parcels

I just wanted to ask people about this new service I had stuck my nose into - Chrisel Parcels (see www.chriselparcels.com). Their website is being updated aparently, but I ordered a catlog when I saw my friend had one on her coffee table. Now, I am a bit suspicious of this and was wondering if anyone had used this service before. My friend said she had joined earlier this month and is loving the service, but it was her first time too. I think it's a great way to pay for something - but my question to you all is: Would you trust it, and would you get it? I already have my catalog but am not sure about sending in the order form. I believe it's a Minnesota company - so anyone have any toughts or comments about a) the service, b) The trusworthiness and c) experiences people have had with what seems like a decent company? New U Journal Global Leapfrog Education

Global Leapfrog Institute Presents Journal of Global Leapfrog Education Congratulations to University of Minnesota Dr. Arthur Harkins, Ph.D. on the Global Leapfrog Institute The Global Leapfrog Institute is devoted to creating, through innovative education and human capital development, communities that can transcend current problems and challenges by empowering themselves with the tools to invent their own futures. Congratulations again to Professor Harkins, and U of M Ph.D. candidates John Moravec and George Kubik on their article in the inaugural issue of Global Leapfrog Education. Their article is called, "Facilitating 21st Century Education: Leapfrogging Culture and Time through Simulational Learning." Global Leapfrog Education has a Blog with information on the new journal Today (Dec. 31, 2006) marks the first release of Global Leapfrog Education (ISSN 1933-0200), an open access, online journal hosted by the Global Leapfrog Institute, LLC. As we learn to master the OJS journal software, articles will be released in two trenches. First, Cristobal Cobo (FLACSO Mexico) discusses new learning opportunities provided by Web 2.03 and successor technologies. In a near future release date, Arthur Harkins, John Moravec and George Kubik (University of Minnesota) describe a leapfrog pathway through simulational learning. Introduction and mission Global Leapfrog Education (GLE) is devoted to exploring how, through education and human capital development, communities can transcend current problems and challenges by empowering themselves to invent their own futures. GLE publishes articles spanning a wide range of interests related to leapfrog education (viz. change, technologies, knowledge production and innovation, global youth leadership, and futures-oriented philosophies and theories of education). This journal provides open access to all of its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge. Our electronic submission process is designed to facilitate rapid publication. Once an article is published, peer reviewers submit written, critical feedback to the author as an addendum to the article, published in GLE. Such reviews may be considered publications in their own right. Reviewers and other participants are also encouraged to contribute to discussions related to each article via the journal blog at this website. What is leapfrogging? * Leapfrogging means jumping over obstacles to achieve goals. * Leapfrogging is a leadership necessity. * Leapfrogging saves precious time. * Leapfrogging builds institutional and community prestige. * Leapfrogging works best if everybody collaborates. Focus and scope The first country to adopt the Leapfrog Paradigm, bolster it with advanced communications technologies, and apply it in preschool through graduate contexts, will either continue to lead or will acquire newfound leadership among emerging knowledge and innovation economies. We are aware of the need for simplicity, but the reality is that the Leapfrog Paradigm we describe is fundamentally cognitive in nature. It is the new educational mission required to support knowledge based innovation economies. New language and concepts are required. The focus of GLE is on the language, concepts and education required to produce knowledge and direct it toward continuous innovation. This calls for an entirely new education mission one that requires a different vocabulary and mindset compared to the now globally-distributed education missions for agricultural, industrial, and information-based societies. GLE will help readers and contributors: * Understand that states, regions and individuals are in a global competition in human capital development and application; * Understand how technology shapes human world views and choices; * Understand the relationship between technological change and social change with emphasis on the emerging Technological Singularity; * Understand exponential acceleration of technological, scientific, societal and economic changes; * Understand multiple perceived realities and their vectors; * Develop leapfrog education scenarios related to technology, innovation, systems design and integration; and, * Connect these leapfrog scenarios with 21st Century education redesign and redirection. Journal keywords and key concepts accelerating change, basic knowledge engine ecology, creativity, cybernetics, design, entrepreneurship, global leapfrog education, invention, innovation, knowledge engine ecologies, knowledge production, knowledge engine ecologies, memes and new social patterns in thought and belief, sociocultural prosumers, youth development Website: Global Leapfrog Institute Website of Journal: Global Leapfrog Education Blog for Global Leapfrog Education Blog of John Moravec Education Futures

So...No More Porn?

Ok. This law was signed on December 20th. No problem, right? Well...President Bush has added a "signing statement" saying that mail can now be opened without the need for a warrant. If your porn arrives all crusty, you better see if you can sue the Secret Service. So...helpful law or not?
